Take your time - stay a few days at each stop.

Distances are short around Läckö-Kinnekulle, so there’s no need to rush. Lidköping makes a natural starting point, with the Läckö area and Kinnekulle table mountain both within easy reach.

Stop 1:

Start in charming Lidköping

Lidköping is a small, pretty town on the shores of Lake Vänern, dating back to the Middle Ages. Its compact centre is good for a leisurely wander, with small independent shops alongside more familiar names.

If you arrive on a Saturday, don’t miss the market in Nya Stadens Torg, a tradition that has been part of town life for centuries. Have a mooch around the stalls before stopping for lunch at Mellbygatans Restaurang, just a stone’s throw from the square – also a great place to pick up locally produced goodies to take away.

A short walk from the town square is Rörstrand Museum. Rörstrand marked its 300th anniversary in 2026, and the museum tells a much bigger story than plates and cups alone.

Alongside classics such as Mon Amie and Swedish Grace, you’ll discover the artists and designers who created them and the generations of factory workers who turned their ideas into reality. The exhibitions explore changing styles, materials, production methods, working lives, successes, and occasional failures across three centuries of Swedish ceramic history.

Ready for something sweet? Stop for fika at historic Garströms Konditori or the classic Rådhuskonditoriet.

Travel on to Läckö Castle on Kållandsö

Head north from Lidköping onto Kållandsö, where Läckö Castle rises dramatically from a rocky headland on the shores of Lake Vänern.

The story of Läckö stretches back to the Middle Ages, but much of the magnificent Baroque castle you see today is the work of Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, who transformed it during the 17th century. There’s plenty to explore outside as well, including the castle’s kitchen garden and Naturum Vänerskärgården – Victoriahuset, where you can discover more about the wildlife and cultural landscape of the Vänern archipelago.

Victoriahuset is also home to Hotell Läckö Wärdshus, where you can check in for the night. Then head out for a walk around the headland or simply settle into your room and enjoy the views of the castle and Lake Vänern.

Stop 2:

Spend the morning at Läckö Castle

After breakfast, it’s time to give Läckö Castle the attention it deserves. Wander through courtyards, richly painted rooms, furnished apartments, the armoury, and treasury and discover how this medieval stronghold became one of Sweden’s great Baroque estates.

After a few hours inside the castle, stop for lunch or fika at Café Stallet by the water. And if there’s a golfer in the group, you could spend the afternoon playing a round at nearby Läckö Golf Club.

Travel on to Spiken fishing village

Just a few kilometres from Läckö Castle is Spiken, one of Lake Vänern’s best-known fishing harbours. Jetties, fishing boats, and traditional boathouses cluster around the water, with shops and small businesses selling local crafts and food.

This is the place to try freshly smoked fish and Vänern vendace roe – sometimes rather grandly referred to as the lake’s red gold and known in Sweden as löjrom.

For dinner, head to Restaurang Sjöboden, housed in an old boathouse that once served as an ice store for the fishing fleet. The kitchen makes generous use of ingredients from Lake Vänern and the surrounding countryside, while the wine list has a fondness for smaller producers.

Nearest stop: Spiken

Stop 3:

Explore Kinnekulle

After another night at Läckö, head east towards Kinnekulle. Sometimes called “the flowering mountain”, this distinctive plateau mountain packs an extraordinary amount of nature and history into a small area, with rare plants, medieval churches, grand country houses, forests, meadows, and sweeping views across Lake Vänern.

On the way, stop at Smedja Therese and Sculpture Park Ouroboros. The sculpture park changes from year to year as new artists are invited to exhibit among the gardens, while the smithy and small shops are good places to discover locally made art and craftwork.

Café på Klostret in Blomberg occupies a beautifully converted old barn and is an atmospheric place to stop for fika or lunch made with local produce.

Another option is Hellekis Kök & Trädgårdscafé, in the old orangery at Hellekis Manor. Stay for a wander around the gardens before continuing across Kinnekulle.

Stations on Kinnekulle: Blomberg station, Forshem station, Hällekis station

 Next stop, Handens hus

Are you looking for something unique to take home? Or on the hunt for a really personal present for someone?

Handens Hus is filled with handwoven textiles, antiques, traditional crafts, and all sorts of things you’re unlikely to find on an ordinary shopping street.

While you’re here, leave time for a walk through Kinnekulle’s remarkable landscape. One place to seek out is Mörkeklev, a dramatic cleft in the limestone with a freshwater spring tucked inside.

Have dinner at Forshems Gästgivaregård

In the afternoon, check in at historic Lundsbrunn Resort & Spa. People have been coming to Lundsbrunn since the 18th century in search of rest and recuperation, and the former health resort is now a modern spa hotel.

Alternatively, stay at the elegant Lidköpings Stadshotell or choose your own cabin beside Lake Vänern at Läckö Strand.

In the evening, make your way to the little village of Forshem for a particularly memorable dinner. Forshems Gästgivaregård traces its history back to the 13th century and lays claim to being Sweden’s oldest inn.

Here, local ingredients and West Swedish food traditions are very much part of the experience. Game comes from Kinnekulle, fish from Lake Vänern, and vegetables, fruit, berries, and mushrooms from local growers and the surrounding landscape.

A fitting end to three days of good food, extraordinary landscapes, and several centuries of Swedish history.

Bon appetit!
