Already in the Middle Ages, the water was used to power mills. In the late 1800s Kvarnbyn developed into one of Sweden's most important industrial areas.
The paper industry, textile industry and oil stocks dominated.
Today the old factory buildings contain companies, museums, artisans and artistic activities. The real character of the area remains and every year several events are organized with culture and business in collaboration.
