Are you a caravan owner seeking a more sustainable vacation and lifestyle? Each journey you embark on is a chance to positively impact the place you visit. By following our tips below, you can reduce the environmental footprint of your holiday, preserve the places you love to explore, and give back to the environments that bring you so much joy. Let's work together to take care of Hornborgasjön, and enjoy your caravan vacation with mindfulness and responsibility. Embrace a greener and more sustainable caravan lifestyle.

Shop local

Please shop from locals when you are here. By visiting markets, shops and restaurants that are owned or run by locals, you support the communities around Lake Hornborga, while also making your stay more memorable.

Respect nature and wildlife

Remember that you are sharing this place with a host of fascinating plants and wildlife. By avoiding picking flowers, littering or disturbing our wild fauna, we can all help preserve the natural beauty that surrounds Lake Hornborga. Inside the nature reserve, stricter rules apply. As a visitor, you are required to follow them.

In the southern part of Lake Hornborga, so-called bird protection rules apply between March 1 and July 15. The southern part is defined as the area south of Almeö and the outlet. In the northern part of the lake, bird protection rules apply between March 20 and July 15. During these periods, it is forbidden to visit the area.

Be responsible for your dog

All dogs are welcome at Lake Hornborga. However, in spring and summer, you are required by law to keep a particularly close watch on your dog. You must keep it within one metre of yourself. In most cases, this means that the dog must be on a leash. The provision applies between March 1 and August 20, and aims to protect breeding wild animals. Inside the nature reserve, the dog must always be kept on a leash. Avoid walking your dog in paddocks with grazing animals.

Follow the Right of Public Access

Outside the nature reserve, the Right of Public Access applies.

The Right of Public Access grants you a lot of freedom, but it also entails obligations. Keep in mind that it is forbidden to cross or stay on private property, or within the privacy of their home. It is also not permitted to pass over plantations or other land that you may damage. Also, remember to close gates behind you when walking through pastures.

Waste separation

Waste separation is just as important on holiday as it is at home. Find the nearest recycling station or take your waste home with you. Find the nearest recycling station or take your rubbish home with you. Keep tidy Leave no trace behind. Pick up rubbish and waste – even things left behind by others. By doing the right thing, you inspire others to do the same.

Never throw away food scraps outdoors Swine fever is a dangerous disease that affects wild boars and domestic pigs. It can be transmitted when wild boar eat things such as sausage or ham. This is why you should never throw away food scraps outdoors.

Save water - use it sparingly. Never empty greywater or latrine waste into the environment.

Be considerate of others

Respect speed limits and traffic rules, especially on narrow roads where you might encounter cyclists and wildlife. Choose larger roads if possible. Drive extra slowly where there is a risk of disturbing birds and other animals. Remember, following traffic rules increases safety for everyone on the road, including pedestrians and cyclists. This consideration is appreciated by locals, enhances the experience for all visitors, and promotes harmony on the roads around Hornborgasjön.

Show respect for locals and other visitors to create a peaceful experience for everyone. Treat the area as if you lived there yourself.

Protect our cultural heritage

Resist the temptation to collect ”travel souvenirs”. By leaving the site intact, you help preserve Lake Hornborga’s historical and cultural treasures for the future.

Use parking spaces

Please park your camper van in a dedicated space. This helps support the local economy, while also preserving the environment and having a pleasant stay.

Fill up on eco-friendly fuel

HVO 100 (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a biodiesel produced from renewable raw materials such as vegetable oil and animal fats. It is known for very low emissions of carbon dioxide and other harmful particles, compared to regular diesel. Consider using HVO 100 if suitable for your camper van. This lets you reduce its environmental impact.

Here you will find in-depth information about why it is a good idea to protect the environment even during your holiday.
