Around Lake Mjörn bike tour
Alingsås
The Mjörn Loop is a classic among cyclists in and around Alingsås. Since 1972, an annual cycling race has been held around the lake. This route follows almost the same course as the race, with a few scenic detours to showcase some extra beautiful spots. The full loop is 67 km long with approximately 700 metres of elevation gain. One of the highlights is cycling along the former railway embankment between Sjövik and Gråbo, where you ride almost right by the shoreline. Don’t forget your swimwear!
Surface & Route Standard
The route follows good-quality paved roads. When leaving and entering Alingsås, it uses pedestrian and cycle paths, although larger roads can be chosen if preferred.
Between Sjövik and Stenkullen, you cycle on dedicated cycle paths, and from Stenkullen to Alingsås on smaller paved roads with light traffic.
Please note that roads 180 and 190 between Alingsås and Sjövik can be busy at certain times of the day.
Route description
From Alingsås, follow the pedestrian and cycle path towards Lövekulle Camping, through the newly built Stadsskogen district and onwards to Västra Bodarna. Continue towards Norsesund, but shortly before reaching it, turn sharply and follow the cycle path towards Ingared.
In Ingared, ride through the village down to Kärrbogärdevägen, continue through the tunnel under the E20 motorway and then uphill along Kärrbogata. There is a short stretch of good-quality gravel here.
After a few hundred metres, you rejoin a paved road and turn south, tackling a fairly steep climb. This is by far the toughest section of the entire loop – after this, the rest of the ride feels much easier!
At the next four-way junction, turn towards “Tollered 3” and follow the road into Tollered. Here you can stop to explore the old factory environments in one of Sweden’s best-preserved mill villages. Nääs Fabriker, offering accommodation and a restaurant, is located just across the E20 motorway – only a short detour from the route.
At the roundabout in Tollered, take the road towards Floda and follow the smaller road past Lilla Nääs – or perhaps make a short detour to Nääs Castle, just a kilometre away. From Lilla Nääs, you return to a cycle path leading to Skallsjö Church, known for its distinctive glass-enclosed church tower, and continue through Floda.
Ride straight through the roundabout towards Ryggebol and continue on the cycle path to the E20, crossing it via “Höga Bron” (the High Bridge). Turn onto Skallsjö Prästväg and follow the small paved road down towards the River Säveån.
Take a moment to stop in the lush, almost jungle-like setting by the river. If you’re lucky, you might spot a salmon in the water or see a kingfisher flash past.
Continue along a smaller gravel path and walk your bike across the unguarded railway crossing – watch out for trains.
From there, cycle west along the bike path beside Lerumsvägen towards Stenkullen, where several lunch restaurants are available if you’re feeling hungry. Follow the pedestrian and cycle paths to reach Gråbovägen and continue north on a separate cycle path. After a few kilometres, the industrial area ends and the landscape opens up into horse paddocks and rolling grain fields.
Upon reaching Gråbo, turn east at the first roundabout and follow the former railway embankment towards Björboholm and Sjövik. Now you can enjoy flat and scenic cycling. Soon you’ll glimpse Lake Mjörn through the trees, and for a long stretch you ride right alongside the water.
In Sjövik, don’t miss a stop at Hagströms General Store, a traditional shop where you’re still served over the counter. Between Sjövik and Brobacka, you cycle along road 190, which can be busy at times, so ride with caution.
In Brobacka, you may wish to stop at Brobacka Café for a traditional Swedish fika, or take a walk in Brobacka Nature Reserve before completing the final stretch back to Alingsås – which can also be busy at certain times.
